Cherry Blossom Queen Candidate Search Under Way

The 2010 Northern California Cherry Blossom Queen Program Committee is now seeking enthusiastic, community-minded Japanese American women to participate in the 43rd annual Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival.

The 2010 Festival will be held on the weekends of April 10-11 and 17-18, with the Grand Parade taking place on Sunday, April 18.

The Queen Program, where the new queen and court will be selected, will be held on Saturday, April 10, at the Sundance Kabuki Cinemas.

This program is geared toward young women who:

• Will serve as representatives for the Japanese American community of Northern California;

• Will endeavor to preserve, promote and perpetuate the Japanese American experience through active participation in civic and community events throughout Northern California;

• Will serve as positive role models and active community members in conjunction with leaders of various organizations;

• Who will uphold the highest values and morals for today’s youth while striving to preserve, honor and maintain the traditions and history of past Japanese American generations.

Qualified candidates must be at least 18 and not more than 25 years of age as of April 10, 2010; be single and not previously married; and be of at least 50 percent Japanese ancestry.

Each applicant must also be a U.S. citizen or a foreign national with permanent status of at least one year, and must have lived in Northern California for at least three years.

Submit an essay of no more than 500 words (typed) in English or Japanese explaining “Why I desire to represent the Japanese American community of Northern California as Cherry Blossom Queen.”
