Nihonmachi Run Results

SAN JOSE—This year’s annual Nihonmachi Run was held on April 25, beginning and ending in front of the Yu-Ai Kai building.
The run/walk and Health Fair helped mark Yu-Ai Kai’s continuing commitment to, and caring for, the community’s seniors. Another annual Japantown event, Nikkei Matsuri, and the weekly Farmer’s Market rounded out a day that brought together many community organizations.
The weather was perfect for the 510 registered runners and walkers participating in the competition. After the run, everybody had an opportunity to enjoy light refreshments and other assorted goodies before heading off to the other activities that were just around the corner from the finish line.
The top three runners overall were: Craig Haupt, 39, of Sunnyvale, who finished in 18 minutes and 45 seconds; Glen Furuta, 48, of San Carlos, 18:58; and Thibault Alix, 28, of San Jose, 19:20. (See complete results below.)
On the basis of applause, the prize for best costume went to members of Wesley United Methodist Church’s Girl Scout Troop 1150, who dressed as hippies; also in the running were the “Tanabees Family,” who dressed as bees.
The Kuwadas were recognized as the largest family group with 12 members, including a dog.
The participant who raised the most pledges was Brenda Mayeda with $320.
The collaborative efforts of the participants, volunteers, major sponsors, Yu-Ai Kai board and staff, and police and sheriff volunteers all helped to enable Yu-Ai Kai to gain funding to help support its programs and services.
The major sponsors were Union Bank of California, Los Gatos Orthopedic Sports Therapy, design2market, The Logo Locker, Harry and Kim Yamashita in memory of Kiyoko Yamashita, San Jose CYS, the SJ Ninja Youth Foundation, the San Jose Zebra Youth Foundation, and the Japantown Medical Group.
Special thanks went to Lt. Ken Tanaka, who coordinated the 40 law enforcement officers from the San Jose Police Department, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, and the Milpitas Police Department. These officers volunteered their time and expertise to ensure a safe and enjoyable day, and this event would not be possible without their help.
