The San Jose Chidori Band will present its 57th Anniversary Concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, at the San Jose Buddhist Church, 640 North Fifth Street in San Jose.
“Enjoy an evening of popular Japanese songs performed by this 21-member Japanese American group and performances by stellar guest artists,” said a spokesperson.
The band will perform many popular songs like “Ai No Mamade” which will be sung by Chidori Band vocalist Shizuko Adachi. This song became famous a few years ago by singer Junko Akimoto who won the Japan Record Award. Chidori Band President and vocalist Shigeru Tashiro will sing “Bokyo Tsugaru Jongara Nagare Uta” and “Furusato Matsuri” from Ohi Daisuke’s collection of songs.
In addition to the band, several guest artists will perform at the concert. Returning guest artist Alexis Iwasaki from Bando Kai will perform a classical Japanese dance to “Ume ni mo Haru.”
Also performing will be guest artists from San Jose Taiko, a dynamic, musical company that combines traditional Japanese drums and choreography to create mesmerizing performances.
They will perform original compositions and collaborate with the band on two songs: “Shiawase Samba” and “Ei Ja Nai Ka.” Both songs are performed at many Bay Area Obon festivals during the summer. San Jose Taiko will be performing a special arrangement of “Shiawase Samba,” created for this concert.
Tickets may be purchased for $12 at the door. If you wish to purchase your tickets before the concert, please call (408) 260-2533.
